The day began with the Bern Bears, fresh from claiming the reserves premiership, making their first appearance in seniors football against the Zurich Giants. The Giants brought their A-game and secured a comfortable victory. Still, the Bears’ speed and excitement promise to be a welcome addition to the seniors competition in 2027, a development already highly anticipated.

The Grand Final itself was an absolute thriller. In a high scoring, hard fought contest, the Jets ultimately prevailed, guided by their star full-forward, Maxim Allen, who finished with an impressive 11 goals. The Winterthur Lions pushed them to the limit throughout, ensuring one of the most exciting Grand Finals in AFL Switzerland history. Despite the loss, the Lions can hold their heads high after how they played.

The hotly anticipated women’s match rounded out a perfect day, as the Bern Bears women’s team faced the Swiss All Stars. Led by Carmen Bunge, the All Stars brought the first AFL Switzerland women’s player, Ulrike Senti, out of retirement for the special occasion. The Bears, under Alina Pirkheim, were boosted by a memorable debut from Her Excellency Elizabeth Day, Australian Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, who kicked 2 goals in her first outing. The growth of women‘s Australian football in Switzerland is very strong!

Above all, it was the atmosphere that shone brightest: smiles everywhere, plenty of laughter, and a shared sense of belonging that makes the AFL Switzerland community so special.
